Pulled the trigger on the holiday 99 dollar C grade Gras.
Pleasantly surprised. Got a complete rifle minus 1 buttplate screw. It even had a rear sight.
Crack in the wood by front barrel band, an easy acra glass fix. Bore rusty but decent rifling.
    Overall not bad .

Got it on sale for $99 was very happy with what I got a full rear sight and stock I should be able to repair and no missing parts. It was also a pre m80 cut. Would recommend even if your just gonna hang it on the wall. But I’ll get this one shooting. I’m happy

Not bad. While it was extremely dirty the grime protected the metal. I don’t see any pitting and the bore is excellent. Rear sights and front included. about 46 percent of the front of the stock was definitely chewed away, but it Still holds together. Might be a good shooter.

I bought a C grade as I wanted an example of this rifle but did not want to alarm my wife with the amount of purchase. The rifle I received was rusty to say the least and had a stock crack at the wrist that was repaired in a typical 3rd world Ethiopian manner: a nail driven crookedly through the crack. The bolt was intact as was the receiver and the only missing component was the slide for the rear sight, not a big deal. Rust pitting was really only apparent on the butt plate and a total disassembly revealed that it did not have the 1880 modification for a ruptured cartridge though the date on the barrel flat is 1878; again, not a big deal. I cleaned the stock, glued the cracking, and doweled it to ensure that it would not reoccur. Then, I sanded and stained it with a mocha brown stain and finished with Tru Oil. The bolt was disassembled and de-rusted as were the butt plate, barrel bands, and the barrel. It took about 3 weeks to complete but the finished product looks great. The bore is decent after much swabbing with abrasive compound and the rifling is good so this can be a shooter and I am DELIGHTED with the finished product. It’s a kick to bring back an ancient arm like this from the almost dead and it’s probably good for the next 150 or so years now. 1878, the year this rifle was manufactured, was during the Presidency of Rutherford B. Hayes and that fact alone makes having this oldie but goodie a delight to have. Very pleased.

Dirty, rusty, and a big (fixable) crack in the stock at the butt. But it’s 100% complete and functional. Got it on sale and for the price, I couldn’t be happier. This is going to be a fun project.
